There are plenty of essentials to bring on a road trip, from a solid snack selection to chargers that keep your phone powered up during the drive. Road trips can be draining for your phone’s battery life, considering the navigation apps that run constantly, or if you’re using it to play music or chat with friends along the way. It’s also a good idea to keep a power bank in the glovebox so you’ll always be prepared whenever your phone unexpectedly dies.

There are plenty of great phone chargers these days for the car, but a few brands in particular stick out for their affordability, speed, and extra features. Read on for a list of the best car phone charger below.

2. RavPower Quick Charge 3.0

The RavPower Quick Charge 3.0 might be small, but it’s perfectly formed and also has the benefit of dual ports. That is super handy if you share your car with someone else who needs to charge their mobile device at the same time as you. Despite its diminutive status, the RavPower can deliver a quick charge for your mobile devices, with the twin 18W USB ports working with most handsets.

On a practical note there’s LED illumination that indicates when you have a device plugged in and charging. This is a useful visual aid that ensures a secure connection and gives you a reminder to unplug when you reach your destination.

As is also the case with most decent car chargers, the unit comes with charging protection, so you don’t inadvertently fry your prized handset. Elsewhere, the RavPower Quick Charge is memorable for its slick and minimal design. It seems to have been put together very well too.

4. DOCA Qi Wireless Car Charger Mount Holder

As mentioned above, I’m all about a clean design and simple aesthetics. This DOCA Qi Wireless Car Charger does just that. Take a look at the photo above and envision this with me. You have a magnet of sorts that acts as a phone cradle. It’s placed on the air vent or dashboard. Place your phone on top and voila! All you see is your phone, not the holder. It’s practically magic.

The mount has a swivel ball that allows for a 360-degree rotation which means you can easily adjust the viewing angle of your phone. So easy, isn’t it?

7. Aikenuo 6 Port Car Adapter

It’s easy to find car chargers with one or two USB ports. With a bit more effort, it’s not hard to find them with three or four ports either. When you’re traveling with a whole bunch of gadgets, however, even four ports won’t be enough to keep everything charging at the same time.

That’s where this Aikenuo charger comes in, with its 96W output and six separate USB sockets. Four of those sockets are QC 3.0-compatible, so if your devices use that standard, you can fast-charge them all. The other two sockets put out up to 2.4 amps each, which is still enough to quickly charge many phones.

How to buy the best car phone charger in the UK 2021

There are two things to consider when buying a car phone holder. One, will it fit your phone? And two, will it fit your car? The good news is that the mounts listed below will work with all popular smartphones.

The other half of the equation, though, is a little more complicated. There are numerous methods for attaching a phone holder to your dashboard or windscreen, and not all of them will suit every car.

A windscreen mount is one convenient option. While poor-quality rubber suckers may slowly lose their grip and drop off, a good mount can be very convenient. Some designs include supports that rest on the dashboard.

You can also get suction grips and cradles that attach directly to your dashboard, although this won’t work if it has a textured surface. Another possibility is to connect the holder to your car stereo.

One of the most popular options is a clip that attaches to your air-conditioning vent. These are ideal for lighter smartphones, but the grip might not be firm enough to hold heavier devices and it also obstructs the airflow.

A final option to explore is a bespoke mount. Swedish firm Brodit make custom mounting units for each model of car to create a permanent mount for your phone.

Attaching your phone to the mount

Certain phone mounts have clips or arms that hold the phone securely: you simply slide the device into place when you get into the car and remove it when you leave.

Other mounts have a magnetic connection, which requires you to attach a metal strip to the back of your phone. This is often slid into the case or stuck on to the back, which, at the very least, isn’t going to add to its aesthetic appeal.

Even clunkier are mounts that have a ball and socket attachment: you’ll need to stick a metal socket to the back of your phone case, which clips into a ball on the in-car mount.

Other features to look out for

There’s not an awful lot to in-car phone mounts: they either hold your phone securely or they don’t. However, you might want to check whether the holder allows you to access the phone’s USB or lightning port so you can charge your phone while in transit – particularly if your phone often doubles as a satnav. Certain mounts even integrate their own QI wireless charger, meaning you can charge your phone without plugging it in. There will, of course, have to be a cable between your car’s USB port or 12V socket and the charger, so make sure it doesn’t dangle anywhere it might obstruct your driving.

Using a mobile phone holder legally

There’s every chance you’ve been in at least one minicab where part of the windscreen is covered by a wall of phones. That’s not an example to follow.

If you’re using a hands-free phone in the car, it’s essential it doesn’t illegally block your view in any direction.

Summary

Choose a model based on your usage pattern. Do not forget to stick to a budget and make an informed choice after considering our detailed buyer’s guide of best car phone charger. The market is flooded with plenty of car chargers. Fortunately, most of them are reliable and offer great performance.

These are also reasonably priced and do not burden your pocket. However, it is better to steer clear of cheaper models which are not equipped with safety features such as overheat protection or immune to voltage fluctuations. What are you waiting for? Go ahead and start shopping for the best car phone charger.
